One-like none: See Don Garlits presented with replica of Top Fuel's first trophy
Today at zMAX Dragway, history came full circle.
On April 27, 2025, in front of a roaring crowd of fans at the American Rebel Light NHRA 4-Wide Nationals, 91 President Glen Cromwellpresented "Big Daddy" Don Garlits with a recreation of the first Top Fuel trophy he earned back in 1963 — a symbol of a career that helped build the very foundation of NHRA drag racing.
For many fans, this was a moment they'd never witnessed: Don Garlits receiving a trophy, arms raised, smile wide. A living legend celebrated not just for what he built, but for who he inspired. Garlits, a consummate drag racing historian himself, lost the original 1963 Top Fuel trophy in a natural disaster. NHRA recognized that gap in history today — and with heartfelt emotion, rectified it.
"[Today] was better [than receiving the trophy in 1963]! I am old enough to appreciate some of the wonderful things that NHRA has contributed to to our great sport! Plus we did not have the fan base we have now!! Then to top It off, we posted me and the trophy on our Facebook page, the picture is now “World Wide”, nothing like that was ever imagined in 1963! God Bless everyone involved! I am having the time of my life!!"
--Don Garlits
While "Big Daddy" invented many things that forever changed the sport — rear-engine dragsters, new safety standards, game-changing aerodynamics — the winners circle wasn't his invention.
He just perfected it.
Seeing Garlits beam with pride, surrounded by fans, racers, and accompained up on stage by John Force Racing's Jack Beckman, todayserved as a reminder:
Legends aren't born. They're built, one pass, one idea, one trophy at a time.
Congratulations, Big Daddy. Your moment today was 62 years in the making — and it was worth every second, every horsepower, and every single mile per hour.
