National Dragster Sportsman Racer of the Month: Don Bevers

The battle for the first NHRA National Dragster Racer of the Month award of 2025 was intense with multiple deserving candidates emerging through the first few events of the season. There were five drivers who appeared in two final rounds, and all five of them emerged with a win and a runner-up.
After much deliberation, Comp racer Don Bevers claimed the honor based on his back-to-back final rounds at the Pacific Division NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener at Firebird Motorsports Park in Chandler, Ariz.
Tucson, Ariz.-based Bevers won the first event of the season when he drove his A/SMA Ford to a final-round win over the A/Nostalgia Dragster of Kevin Carter in the final round.
Two days later, Bevers went to his second final before a foul start against Joe Mozeris cost him a chance for a clean sweep of both events. Despite the loss, Bevers was able to bank 149 points, which represents a solid start to the 2025 season.
Honorable Mentions
Chase Williams was able to match Bevers' feat with a pair of final-round finishes in Comp at the recent doubleheader in Belle Rose, La. After a runner-up in the Division 4 Lucas Oil Series race, Williams went the distance in the Laris Motorsports Insurance Cajun NHRA SPORTSnationals on Sunday.
In Stock, Bruce Kastle ended a long victory drought with a win at the Division 2 opener in Orlando, Fla., and then returned with a runner-up at the Cajun SPORTSnationals event in Belle Rose.
So far this season, no Sportsman driver has scored more points than Super Gas racer Nathan Vrooman, who has a win Orlando, a semifinal in Gainesville, and three other round-three finishes in his first five events.
Top Dragster racer Rusty Baxter is also celebrating a pair of final rounds, including a win at the “Baby Gators” event in Gainesville and a runner-up in Belle Rose.
Likewise, David Cook, who nearly won the Right Trailers Top Sportsman title last season, got off to a fast start by racing to back-to-back finals at the Division 7 opener in Phoenix. Cook won the first event and then scored a runner-up in race two.
