Top Fuel round 1

Doug Foley

Hometown hero Doug Foley won his first-round quad with a strong 3.77 but did it in a hail of fire and parts that inadvertently trigger the win light in Clay Millican’s lane for an apparent second-place finish that was later reversed through video review to advance tire-smoking Antron Brown'a 5.81 instead. Shawn Reed, who had his career-best qualifying effort (No. 2) here last fall, finished fourth.

Brown has the most final quad appearances among the pro categories in the ‘four-wide era,’ with 12 appearances between the Las Vegas and Charlotte events. Brown has visited the final elimination quad at six of the last nine four-wide events contested between Las Vegas and Charlotte, including his recent runner-up finish two weeks ago in Las Vegas.

Justin Ashley and Brittany Force also advanced, with Force having to pedal her 341-mph HedrickCars.com entry to get around Todd Paton and Spencer Massey.

Shawn Langdon’s 3.728 drove around Josh Hart’s ,045 holeshot-aided 3.755 to win by just .004-second, but Hart’s gatejob got him to the finish line in second place ahead of Ida Zetterström’s better-but-later 3.752. Scott Farley finished fourth.

Hart’s record at zMax Dragway in four-wide competition is impressive. In three of his previous four appearances, he has raced to the final quad.

Low qualifier Doug Kalitta’s 3.755 was one of the best runs of the round but it was only good for third place behind Steve Torrence (3.747) and Tony Stewart, whose beat Kalitta on a holeshot with a 3.774. Stewart won his first two rounds at the Las Vegas four-wide on holeshots. Is he ready to repeat?

Semifinal quads (lane choice by order):
Steve Torrence vs. Tony Stewart vs. Doug Foley vs. Antron Brown
Shawn Langdon vs. Justin Ashley vs. Josh Hart vs. Brittany Force

Low qualifier Paul Lee also exited in the next quad, finishing third behind Matt Hagan and Dave Richards with Richards, who went to the final quad in Las Vegas two years ago, eking past tractionless Lee by just .007-second.

Las Vegas four-wide winner Austin Prock looked strong with a 3.902 to finish ahead of Ron Capps’ 3.936. Buddy Hull finished third with yet another 4.0-second pass from the Jim Dunn entry while two-time world champ Cruz Pedregon had a big engine explosion and flash fire to finish fourth, It’s Capps’ first win light since the season-opening Gatornationals.

Heavily-favored Jack Beckman and Spencer Hyde also were upset in their quad, finishing third and fourth behind Chad Green’s 3.97 and Alexis DeJoria’s 4.04.

With Lee and Beckman both exiting in round one, Prock is poised to take the points lead if he advances to the final.

Pro Stock round 1

Enders

The nitro classes were wild, and Pro Stock followed suit including a bizarre opening quad. Cory Reed and Erica Latino advanced after Troy Coughlin Jr. was timed out on the starting line. Troy’s misfortune affected his cousin, Cody Coughlin, who was in the adjacent lane. Cody didn’t get his engine rpm up in time, and finished third.

Chris McGaha and Matt Hartford advanced from the next quad after Elite team drivers Jeg Coughlin Jr. and Greg Stanfield both shook the tires and shut off. McGaha was off the starting line first with a nearly perfect reaction time and won with a 6.566, taking a holeshot victory over Hartford’s 6.557.

Tire shake also played a part in the third quad although it may not have mattered as Greg Anderson lowered the boom with a 6.487 in his HendrickCars.com Camaro. Brandon Foster also moved on with a 6.595 in his F6 Motorsports entry while Kenny Delco and Deric Kramer fell victim to tire shake.

Dallas Glenn played a game of “anything you can do, I can do better” with teammate Greg Anderson as he stole low elapsed time of the event with a 6.481 in his final quad win. After a tough start to the season, Erica Enders showed significant signs of progress with a 6.526 to move on and score her first round win of the season. Mason McGaha ran a competitive 6.547 but did not advance and Matt Latino also failed to move on after shaking the tires. Latino was first off the starting lien with a .008 light.

Pro Stock Motorcycle round 1

Clontz

Steve Johnson continued his string of solid runs with a 6.798 to move into the second quad where he will be joined by Marc Ingwersen, who moved on with a 6.866 over Ryan Oehler and Jerry Savoie. Oehler ran a 6.890 but couldn’t crack the top two while Savoie, making his first runs in more than a year, was unable to make the call after his Suzuki ran into a problem on the starting line.

The third quad had just three bikes and that became two when Jianna Evaristo’s JHG Buell would not start. That allowed Kelly Clontz and Richard Gadson to move on. Clontz won the quad thanks to a 6.891 after Gadson pulled in the clutch lever and coasted across the finish line.

A double red-light settled the final match as John Hall and Hector Arana Jr. left ahead of the green light, sending low qualifier Gaige Herrera into the next round with a 6.728, the quickest run of the round. Despite the foul, Arana will also move on since his red-light was less offensive than Hall’s.

Semifinal quads (lane choice first):
Gaige Herrera vs. Steve Johnson vs. Marc Ingwersen vs. Hector Arana Jr.
Matt Smith vs. Chase Van Sant vs. Kelly Clontz vs. Richard Gadson.
